Project Summary
The Misfit Kids is a faith-based psychological thriller series that explores the battles of the adolescent mind.
The story begins when a group of children are kidnapped and taken to a mysterious island. To escape, these young heroes must figure out how to break free from their own mental prisons, which are guarded by monsters that lurk within their imagination.
The Concept
In December 2021, I had recently started a new job in AV. Our department head told us the company was looking for fresh ideas to greenlight for their streaming service. One night I got an idea: a cartoon series about kids battling their mental struggles, which manifested as personalized monsters. The twist was that this would be faith-based. The concept didn’t align with the company’s branding, so instead of pitching it, I decided to work on it as an original IP. I could see the visuals perfectly in my head. It was just a matter of bringing it to life.
Soon after, I bought a journal that happened to be the same color blue as I wanted for the branding. I kicked names around in my head, originally finding inspiration in ‘The Isle of Misfit Toys’ from Rudolph. Eventually, I landed on ‘The Misfit Kids’—a story about children who are misfits in this world because they are citizens of a different kingdom.
The first story would revolve around Adam, a boy who is locked in a talking room. I wanted to convey the experiences with loneliness, and show how to battle those feelings in a way that’s authentic, psychological and empowering.
